Tanzania Safari Seasons

Home > Safari Seasons

Tanzania, known for its stunning wildlife and scenic landscapes, has varying high and low seasons for safaris due to its climate and wildlife migrations. Understanding these seasons can help you plan the best time for your safari adventure.

The country has two main seasons: the dry season (June to October and December to March) and the wet season (April to May and November). Here’s a breakdown of the high seasons and low seasons:

High Seasons

  1. June to October:

    • Weather: Dry season with little to no rainfall, clear skies, and pleasant temperatures.
    • Wildlife Viewing: Excellent, as animals congregate around water sources. This is also the time for the famous Great Migration in the Serengeti, particularly around June to July when the wildebeest cross the Grumeti River and August to October when they cross the Mara River.
    • Tourism: High, with many tourists visiting the national parks, so it’s advisable to book accommodations and tours well in advance.
    • Best Parks: Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara.
  2. December to March:

    • Weather: Short dry season with hot temperatures and minimal rainfall.
    • Wildlife Viewing: Good, with calving season in the Serengeti from late January to February, offering a chance to see newborn animals and predator interactions.
    • Tourism: Moderately high, especially around the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Low Seasons

  • March to May:

    • Weather: Long rainy season with heavy rains, making some roads and areas difficult to access.
    • Wildlife Viewing: More challenging due to the dense vegetation and dispersed wildlife, but still possible. Lodges and camps often offer lower rates and discounts.
    • Tourism: Low, with fewer tourists, providing a more secluded experience.
  • November:

    • Weather: Short rainy season with brief, scattered showers.
    • Wildlife Viewing: Good, as the rain revitalizes the landscape and wildlife starts to gather again.
    • Tourism: Low to moderate, with fewer crowds compared to the high seasons.

Best Time for Specific Activities

  • Great Migration: June to October is the best time for witnessing the Great Migration in Serengeti National Park.
  • Wildlife spotting: June to October is also the best time for spotting wildlife in general, as they congregate around water sources.
  • Birdwatching: April to May is an excellent time for birdwatching, as many migratory species visit Tanzania during this period.
  • Hiking: December to March is a good time for hiking in Tanzania, as the weather is generally mild and dry.
